Why CrossFit?

Today is October 1st, 2019, and I'm starting my 30 day challenge of creating 30 pieces of content in 30 days. We're going to post a video of this blog post on our YouTube channel and we're going to post the audio on a podcast, so no matter where you are, you can get this information straight from me. And I figured I would start with WHAT IS CROSSFIT? What are we doing here? Why do we do what we do and how do we do it? And I thought the best way to do that is to start with a little bit of background on me.

Before I got into CrossFit, I was involved in triathlons (just as an amateur, just enjoying it for fun). I did it because it was hard. I liked being able to swim, being able to bike, being able to run, do all these different things and still finish a race, and not have to be a specialist in one category. There were always those specialists that won the race, and I was always a generalist. I liked to do a lot of different things. And CrossFit really is just taking that general fitness to the next level.

On top of cardiovascular conditioning, we're going to develop muscular strength. We do a lot of weight lifting - we move objects through space. We move our bodies through space - gymnastics. So, from simple pushups, sit ups, pull ups, to advanced things like climbing ropes and walking on your hands (those are things that I still struggle with- the handstand walks are definitely hard for me). But then of course on top of everything else you've got to just have that fundamental metabolic conditioning. We do conditioning, we do running and rowing, biking, so that we can have all different kinds of fitness. We want any physical task to be available to us, so that we can just do anything we need to in life, nature, or the world.

The really nice side effect of that kind of training is that it ends up looking really good naked too. There's nothing wrong with saying, "Hey, I want to look good." And CrossFitters generally look pretty good. That's not nothing.

One of the things that CrossFit has a bad reputation for in general is causing injuries. And it's simply not accurate. We have no higher incident rate of injury than any other physical activity. In fact, runners are some of the most injured athletes out there because people tend to not run correctly and end up having wear and tear issues over time. And while we're spreading out our load and the impact of different activities on different parts of our body, runners are really just messing up their ankles, knees, and hips a lot of the time. Not always, but a lot of the time.

So, that's what we do here at Sequoia CrossFit. We're going to get you in great shape and we're going to get you strong, we're going to get you lean, build strong muscles, help you lose excess body fat, look good naked, sleep better, have more energy throughout the day, all those wonderful things. So please come join us. Click around here on our site. It gives you a lot of information about how to get started. Basically, you can book an intro session with us between classes when it's nice and quiet. We can take all the time in the world to get to know you, what your particular needs are, and how we can best serve them. So click here to book that No-Sweat Intro and hopefully we'll see you very soon.
