Tasty Tuesdays - Macronutrients

Hello! Today we are talking about Macronutrients. People are often confused about what our body really needs in order to function properly. It really boils down to the three main macronutrients - Protein, Fat, and Carbohydrates. These three macronutrients are the main food groups that the body needs for energy and to maintain its constant ongoing systems.  Each component is necessary and they often overlap in each food. Most foods will contain more than one macronutrient. What’s important is learning how each macronutrient works as they all play a different role in the body. We’ll break these down even further in the future, but for now, here are the basic functions for the three main macronutrients.

  • Carbohydrates energize the body, as it’s preferred fuel source, and maintain the digestive system with complex carbohydrates.

  • Proteins build muscle/other important body structures and transport nutrients throughout the body.

  • Fat insulates/protects the most vital organs and energizes the body in times of calorie deprivation or starvation.

As you can see, there is a ton of crossover between each of the food groups. What makes the difference in your daily nutrition is knowing how to balance each macronutrient. Every method comes with the important message that everyone is different and it takes time to find what works best for you!
