Why Do I Need A Coach For CrossFit?
Hey everybody, it's Matt from Sequoia CrossFit and I'm coming to you today from my truck instead of from inside the gym because I wanted to talk to you about coaching and specifically why you need a coach.
The reason that I'm in the truck right now is I'm actually running an errand. I'm running the dogs home to drop them off so they can hang out inside where it's nice and cool because it's hot out today. And I am off to go see my therapist, which I do every week. And I'm pretty open about talking about therapy and why you need someone to talk to. Even if everything's going great, it's really good to fine tune and have a better understanding of yourself, and that's really what we do as coaches in CrossFit.
We are watching and listening to what you're doing and saying and how you're feeling and taking all that into account and helping you be better even if everything's going well, even if you're feeling great. And we're just trying to get that last little bit of performance out of you. Or maybe things are pretty broken down and we've got to start from scratch and give you a path towards wellness.
That's the value of having a CrossFit coach and that's also why we start with five personal training sessions with all of our new members. We want you to get really great one-on-one time with a coach. We want to make sure that you know not just what we're going to be doing and to sort of break down the intimidation factor of starting a new fitness program, but so that you can build a relationship one-on-one with someone who's going to be responsible for you and responsible for your wellbeing during classes.
But also we want you to have the tools and the tactics to really be successful long-term doing CrossFit. We want to make sure that you understand, "Hey, this is where I stand when I squat. This is the thing that always happens when I do this. I feel it here and I need to work on that. And here's some stuff outside of class that I should be working on. Here's some bonus work that's really specific to me that's going to help me perform at my utmost."
As coaches, some of the soft skills that we use are really reading your body language as you walk through the door, seeing if you're in a good mood, seeing if you're mentally ready to hit a hard workout. If you're not, that could be a reason to scale back the workout for you for today. Your mental state is super important to really performing well. And if you don't take that into consideration when you're doing your workout, you expose yourself to injury and you want to avoid that. So we're definitely checking in with you psychologically, but also seeing how you move. We're evaluating how you move when you warm up, seeing how your ankles are moving today. If that knee that's always a little bit funny is still being funny today, then we want to address that during the warm ups and see if there's maybe some extra work you need to be doing to make sure that that knee stays safe. Or maybe you need to modify entirely and not do a certain movement to protect yourself for long term.
So just in the same way that I'm going right now to see my therapist and see my professional to talk about the things that are working well for me and maybe some things that I need to do to be optimizing my performance in my life, your coach every day in class is going to be applying those same tactics and that same strategy to make sure that your having the best hour of your day and day after day with us at Sequoia CrossFit.
